One of the most dangerous heresies of the first two centuries of the church was Gnosticism. Its central teaching was that spirit is entirely good and matter is entirely evil. With this unbiblical dualism, the Apostle John wrote this letter to the church with two basic purposes in mind: (1) to expose false teachers and (2) to give believers assurance of salvation. On his second missionary journey, the Apostle Paul came to Corinth to preach the Word of God and established a church there. Now, just a few years later, he was receiving questioning letters and reports of problems. The church was troubled with division, lawsuits between believers, sexual sins, disorderly worship, and spiritual immaturity. The Apostle Paul wrote his 1st letter to the Corinthians to correct them, answer their questions, and instruct them in several areas. He warned them not to be conformed to the world, but rather, to live as godly examples, reflecting godliness in the midst of an immoral society. This letter was intended to restore the Corinthian church to its foundation - Jesus Christ. Nearing the twilight of his reign, we find King David preparing the nation of Israel for his successor. Tension filled the air as personalities claim the throne for themselves. Ultimately, we see the hand of God at work - the God of Israel moving actively to anoint the next king.
